Good bye Peter, long live the ACME protocol

Leer en Español

I was thinking about what my tribute to Peter Eckersley should look like this morning when a timely email reminded me of how much he has made my life easier. By creating the ACME protocol, he not only provided free SSL certificates to the masses but also disrupted the accepted notion that a human being was needed to certify domain ownership. The ACME protocol (Automatic Certificate Management Environment) automated the entire process. That concept was revolutionary and allowed his company to offer the certificates for free, and now others like Google follow his steps to validate supply chain lineage, for example.

As for the email warning? I do not have to worry one bit, because, thanks to Peter, in a couple of days the server in question will issue an automated command to renew the certificates without mine or any human interaction.

Thank you, Peter
